Mira Nair: "Salaam Bombay! is the outcome of a five-year dream; born out of the desire to celebrate the spirit of survival street children in Bombay (Mumbai) - their humour, strength, dignity and panache in a world where the luxury of childhood is denied them. I didn't want young actors who didn't experience such reality, but rather street children; those who know solitude in a cruel city, those who do not know what their next meal will be like, those who are afraid that the shoes they have on their feet will be stolen. We worked with 19 talented and expressive young actors from the streets of Bombay, a few big "stars" of Indian cinema and an international team, systematically avoiding studios and using instead the streets, station platforms, brothels and all the hidden aspects of Bombay." The film was nominated for an Oscar in Best Foreign Language Film category.
