Presentation
The third new production of a work by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo da Ponte at the Opéra national du Rhin in three years, after Le nozze di Figaro in 2017/18 and Don Giovanni in 2018/19. This show is brought to you by German director David Hermann. Jacques Lacombe will be conducting the Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse, which is under his artistic direction. Of the three operas from the Mozart/Da Ponte collaboration, Così fan tutte is certainly the strangest, most ambiguous and most open to interpretations – and certainly the most disturbing. This piece does not lay bare class relations or issues of the dying Ancien Régime. Nor does it portray a libertine struggling against God or the ghost of one of his victims. No, Così fan tutte explores delicate, mysterious feelings of love that alternate between hope, betrayal, cruelty, forbidden desires. The complexity in ourselves and the other, the tension between fear and temptation, is dissected with empathy to a score with some of Mozart’s most beautiful passages.
