Presentation
By draining the Lake of Dreams to build a city in its bed, the birds set in motion a chain of devastating events. The moon's reflection vanishes from the water's surface, the dreamers lose their sleep, and their dreams---which the stork usually fishes and takes to the sky so the stars can shine - evaporate. Deprived of its dreams, the night is extinguished, and the world knocked off-kilter. The peacock goes blind while the Nightingale desperately seeks its voice; the sparrows lose their former agility and the hoopoe, the eternal globetrotter, has lost his powers of flight. Each bird fights to claim the Dreamers for themselves to replace the powers they have lost. As fires rage through the city, the Dreamers must return the Stork to save the city from destruction.
British composer Howard Moody has devised a new opera commissioned by the OnR and inspired by The Conference of Birds (1171) by the Persian poet Farid al-Din Attar. For this family-friendly musical adventure, its designers Sandra Pocceschi and Giacomo Strada bring to the stage school students from the Meinau district, hearing-impaired children, and young singers from the Maîtrise du Conservatoire de Strasbourg, who join the four soloists. Recommended for ages 5 and over.
